Effective Communication Strategies

Be specific about the problem when seeking help.
Make a point not to talk around the problem, but to be clear about what you want.   Don't worry about using the right words, but state clearly in your words what you want to achieve.

Know what you are talking about
Use all resources available to you to know the specifics of what you want for your child.

Keep talking to people.
Avoid becoming single minded or shutting out new information.   Keep the lines of communication open by being willing to hear others.   Continue talking to other professionals as well.

Research the problem on your own.
Use the library, internet, community agencies and resources to get the greatest information possible.

Consider what you are told in relation to what you have observed.
There may be times when information you are given by the school does not make any sense.   If a recommendation appears to be impractical or doesn't match your sense of your child, weigh it against your knowledge and observations of your child; consult your instincts for what is best.

Trust your instincts.
Remember that in many ways you are the expert on your child.   You are also very intuitive about what may work well, or not so well, for your child.   Insist that your reactions to proposals be considered and alternative options be available.

Put your child first
Many other people will be involved in helping you-invited or not.   Family, friends, neighbors, teachers, doctors and other professionals may be advising you during the process.   In the end, it is your decision, and it should be based on what you feel is best for your child.   Remember that his or her needs come first.
