Tips for Becoming More Firm without Sacrificing Warmth

1) It helps if you already have a system, method, or strategy in place for disciplining negative behavior. By this I am referring to a system you can readily implement such as allowing natural consequences to prevail, offering choices, problem solving, logical consequences, charts/stickers, token systems, pre-routine games/activities, time-out, grounding and "1-2-3 no talking/no emotion method. Any of these methods would be good ways to communicate what your rules and expectations are. Your system must include clear expectations and rules.
2) Be clear about what the consequences are when your children follow the rules and what will happen if they do not.
3) Stay calm while you are handling discipline, don't wait until you are feeling pushed to your limits to intervene.
4) Don't get drawn into long discussions (lawyer sessions) with your kids about the rules. Your pre-planning and having a system will help some to reduce conflicts. Nothing will eliminate them completely.
5) Be prepared to intervene each time your child does not follow through with the rules. Especially at first, have a few rules that you are willing and can follow through on immediately and each time.
