Making Adjustments for the Child with Kinesthetic & Auditory Modality Weakness in the Classroom

How to Make Adjustments for the Child with Kinesthetic Modality Weakness in the Classroom

  • Some children with this problem are given medication

  • Make it harder to move than to sit still (place the child's table and chair close to the wall to make him/her aware of movement- he/she may be unaware of his/her own movement.   Also he/she is distracted by movement of others

  • Make certain that these children go to the bathroom, have drinks, etc., before beginning instructional period

  • Don't ask them to sit too long   You will get more out of them in three minutes of concentrated work than in thirty minutes when conditions are not right

  • This child has a need to know when the work/study time will end. A timer or clock is useful

  • Don't place this child too near other children

  • Contingency management system good with this type of child- task reward

  • Quiet periods interspersed with active periods are best

  • This child needs a quieting down period after physical activity

How to Make Adjustments for the Child with Auditory Modality Weakness in the Classroom

  • Take out as much noise as possible

  • Find him a quiet place to work

  • Very soft music background may be used but not bouncy music

  • Use a few words as you can

  • If you repeat, use the same words

  • Speak directly to this child

  • Earphones and tape recorder help cut out distraction of other noises

  • Cup your hand about his ear to help him focus on instruction
