Making Adjustments for the Child with Visual Modality Weakness in the Classroom

  • Take out visual distractions.   It is impossible to take visuals out of the regular classroom, but try to place the child where he is not bombarded by too many visual items.   (He/she just swims visually in an overloaded situation)

  • Leave a frame of blank wall around visual displays

  • On worksheets put a heavy line around items to help pupil to attend to one item at a time.   (This can often be done to existing ditto sheets.   This does not prevent the use of the worksheet with other children)

  • Give him/her a BIG marker

  • Allow him/her to point if necessary.   Let him/her touch the first letter of every word

  • Have him/her clear the table top (desk top)

  • Let the child get one worksheet at a time from stacks rather than hand the child several papers at once.   Also, give the child a purpose for moving about a bit as he/she turns in the completed paper and picks up his/her next sheet from the next stack

  • Try not to stand in front of too cluttered background when instructing him/her.   (For some children, it may be necessary for the teacher to wear more simple clothing)

  • Give one step at a time
