WHAT REALLY HAPPENS?: Auditory perception deficits
occur if sensory processing of auditory and vestibular input is
inadequate. Speech and language may show problems (including articulation
problems). Visual perception deficits can occur with disorder in the
visual, vestibular, proprioceptive, and/or tactile systems. Many other
problems such as poor eye-hand coordination, motor problems, poor self-esteem,
inability to organize, etc. occur with lower level dysfunction. DO
ALL CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES OR BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS HAVE SENSORY
INTEGRATION DYSFUNCTION?: No, but many do. WHAT KIND
OF TESTING CAN IDENTIFY THESE PROBLEMS?: The Sensory Integration and
Praxis Tests were developed and standardized under the direction of Dr. A. Jean
Ayres. Only individuals certified in the administration of the SIPT
battery are qualified in its use. WHERE DO I FIND SOMEONE
CERTIFIED?: Sensory Integration International maintains a listing of
Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists certified to administer the
Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests. Information is available by

DO I KNOW IF A CHILD NEEDS THIS EVALUATION?: It is recommended for
children with developmental, learning, and behavioral problems. Emotionally
disturbed children may benefit also. Problems may be very minimal,
moderate, or major ones. Many children in regular classrooms need to be
evaluated. Symptoms include: delays or irregularities, reversals,
poor spatial awareness, incoordination, muscle weakness, hyperactivity,
distractibility, poor play skills, etc. CAN CHILDREN WITH
THESE PROBLEMS BE HELPED?: Yes, many children are helped.
Specific recommendations for therapy are made following the evaluation. WHAT
