The Importance of Play Activities in Coping With the Symptoms of Autism
The impairment of social interaction and communication skills in children with autism symptoms becomes more apparent through play activities. While the lack of social interaction and speech can sometimes be missed in the home environment (not all children vocalize and interact at the same level at similar age), poor interaction with other children of a similar age is a significant indicator of potential autism. Due to the lack of social awareness, the autistic child may appear to prefer playing alone. The tendency of the autistic to focus on an object, for example, may be apparent in a simple activity like playing with a toy truck. While it appears that the child is indeed playing with the truck, in...

Selective Mutism Or Autism?
My daughter was diagnosed with autism in May 2008. For several months after getting the diagnosis I had a very hard time believing it. Many people told me it can be very difficult to accept your child is autistic but the quicker you accept it, the better off your daughter will be. I decided to go ahead and start the therapy path suggested to me but I continued to feel my daughter's diagnosis may be wrong. When given the diagnosis, I was told there was nothing I can do for her but to get her help through the state with therapy sessions. It took a very long time to get the therapy set up for my daughter. In the meantime, I started on my own crusade. While researching and talking to people, I learned a...

If the child is a baby he could seem different from birth that meaning he could be unresponsive to people or focusing on one item for long periods of time. Children with autism syndrome have often unusual responses to sensory experiences such as sounds or the way objects look and...
Homeopathy and ADHD - A Highly Undersetimated Remedy
Mention homeopathy ADHD treatment and most doctors will turn a deaf ear unless they are homeopaths themselves. The main argument against homeopathy is that the solutions are so highly diluted that they cannot possible have any effect on human tissues or organs. But, as homeopaths will tell you, they do have an effect and they do cure some ailments. The exact mechanism may not be understood but they do work. Ask your doctor if he really understands how an amphetamine drug like Concerta works on a child's neurotransmitters and he will not be able to tell you because nobody in the medical establishment to-day can answer that question. And that goes for many other drugs used to-day in modern medicine...

The Basics of Melatonin Autism Therapy
Recent research - such as that performed by Jaak Panksepp, Ph.D. Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, OH - demonstrates that the melatonin autism sufferers produce in their bodies has an impact on the degree and the appearance of their symptoms as well as their ability to achieve a quality sleep. The body's natural clock is based upon a twenty-five hour cycle which, clearly, does not line up with the twenty-four hour solar clock on which the world functions. In order to make up for this lack of alignment, the human brain releases a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland, located at the very base of the brain. This is the gland most commonly linked to the...

With about 20 minutes of lunch hour left, a work colleague who is a friend of Brad approaches their table and joins the conversation. But now only Brad and their colleague are talking. For most parents, one of the most trying times in their lives is during their child's teenage years. When puberty hits, young adults go through serious changes in their bodies and minds, and parents have little or no control over many situations. In an autistic child, puberty is no different. Although your autistic child is not experiencing puberty in quite the same ways as others his or her age, major hormonal changes still occur in the body. This can lead to extreme results, and this can be either good or bad depending on how your child reacts to the new hormone levels. One of the scariest side effects of changes in an autistic person's body is the onset of seizures. Many autistic individuals...

Siblings Of Autistic Children Siblings who are in a family with autism present, may have a difficult time for them to relate, understand each other and cope. To assure siblings will get a long with others in the family with autism, requires patience and a huge amount of love. I believe, if the siblings are taught to be kind and loving, this will encourage them, that when there are mistakes, that are made with the sibling relationships, they will forgive each other. A child with autism in a family with siblings requires everyone to be taught values. For example, consideration graciousness, respect, sharing and concern for others, which will assure the siblings to get along. As a parent(s) or...
Research related to omega-3 fatty acids, typically derived from fish oil, and hyperactive children has been ongoing since at least 1987. Multiple studies have been conducted concerning fish oil and attention deficit disorder. The results of this research have not always been readily available to parents and doctors may or may not have always been aware of it. Recent surveys have shown that although most doctors are aware of the health benefits associated with fish and fish oil, most do not prescribe or suggest it to their patients. Current recommendations concerning fish oil and hyperactive children may arise, at least in part, from research conducted at Oxford University in 2005. This research...

ADHD Coaching Tip - Be Careful Of People Who Focus On All The Negative When You Struggle With ADHD
Children who struggle with ADHD often know what they are doing wrong. Sure, there are times when they don't, and they need reminding or redirection. In my experience as a therapist, there are a few typical ways of doing this: - Telling someone they are doing it all wrong. - Helping them see what they are doing wrong. - Focusing on the strengths, and guiding them to more of what they should be doing. While each approach certainly can have an impact, I would first suggest to parents that they ask themselves on very important question: What is the result you are looking for?" Are you looking to build them up? Or are you looking to break them apart? As a therapist and ADHD coach, my tend to believe...
ADHD Question - Can You Relate to How This Mother Feels About Medicating Her Child For ADHD?
As an ADHD coach and former therapist, I get asked a lot of different questions. Here's one example I wanted to share with you: My 3 year old daughter is what I consider to be an 'active' toddler. In the last several months, she has been getting worse and worse and I don't know what to do. She is constantly getting into things, stays up until after midnight, and then wakes up before my husband and I (as early as 5 AM sometimes). Nothing seems to calm her down. I am really worried and I have tried everything. Oh yea, and my daughter is incredibly creative but she won't sit still long enough to express herself. I have tried different crafts and other activities, and nothing seems to work for her. I...
ADHD Parenting Tips - Why You Need to Run Quickly From People With Answers About Children and ADHD
Let's be honest with one another. Everyone has an opinion about any given topic, and this is especially true about ADHD. I haven't found a more controversial, misunderstood topic being talked about by so many different people. Unfortunately, what I find to be even more troubling are the overwhelming people who jump to conclusions by offering answers without so much as asking any questions. ADHD is an incredibly complex condition, that leaves so many questions unanswered in the scientific and medical communities. There's just an enormous amount to know about the body, the brain, and the mind-body connection. I know there are many different beliefs about whether or not ADHD is a real condition. Let's...
Autism Spectrum Disorders - Can Homeopathy Alleviate Possible Symptoms of Autism in Your Baby
Autism- Early Signs? From birth, one of our twin girls was big into gazing into our eyes for long periods and very interested in people in general. When she cried, she kept her eyes open and looked to me for support. This was very different behaviour to our other little wonder who demonstrated little interest in others and when upset did not direct her communication towards anybody in particular. When she did make eye contact it was fleeting and she moved her head to the side as if the experience was uncomfortable. Although both began to smile on the same day, this little girl practiced her new skill much less frequently that her sibling. Autism-All Children Have Their Own Rhythm Having worked as a...
Autism Statistics That Only Few People Really Know About
That mean old man that is living in the same block with you; perhaps he really isn't mean. Maybe he is just sick. Maybe that little girl who will not play with any other young person in your apartment building is actually only suffering from some kind of mental disorder. And maybe the teenager you see in the park standing by himself all the time, staring at a tree and lining things up really isn't the snub you thought him to be; maybe the slightly older woman who comes with him to the park is in actuality not a child molester but a caregiver. There are so many people with autism in the United States today, and more keep popping out of the woodwork all the time. With the better diagnostic techniques...
Autism in Toddlers - Signs to Expect
Today, there is an increasing number of cases of autism in toddlers. Signs and symptoms of the disorder are also becoming detectable. But this does not mean that there is an outbreak or it is becoming prevalent. This is only because of the several studies and observations conducted every year to solve this problem that impairs the development of a child. Autism refers to a spectrum of disorders which is characterized by impairment in social and communication skills and a demonstration of restricted or repetitive behavior. Children with ASD see feel, or sense differently compared to children with normal development. It is like they have their own world. They prefer to be alone and do not want to be...

My son comes from a long line of bedwetters. I can't count the hours of lost sleep from waking him up to go potty. I can't count the number of quarters I spent washing the sheets. The pediatrician told me not to worry because the bladder doesn't mature until age 7. I would invite her to help me drag the sheets up and down four flights of stairs every time the bed was wet. I personally had better things to do with my time every night after work than wash sheets. I would rather be investing my time and my money in a home business and spending quality time with my son in the park so he could run off his energy. I learned from a video called Fed Up with Children's Behavior by Sue Dengate, that food dyes...
